What is permeable concrete?

Permeable concrete is a high-performance surfacing system designed to let water pass through its interconnected pores and back into the ground. It combines strength, durability and style while helping to manage stormwater naturally.

Ideal for residential, commercial and civic projects, it delivers hard-wearing, attractive surfaces that support a more sustainable future.

  • Interconnected pores let rainwater soak straight through the surface
  • Helps reduce standing water, puddles and surface run-off
  • Hard-wearing finish for driveways, paths, car parks and public spaces

Permeable concrete FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about permeable concrete for your driveway, path or project.

What is permeable concrete?

Permeable concrete (sometimes called pervious or no-fines concrete) is a concrete surface with an open, interconnected pore structure. Instead of sitting on top or running off, rainwater passes straight through the surface into a free-draining sub-base and back into the ground.

Where can permeable concrete be used?

It's suited to driveways, patios, garden paths, footpaths, cycleways, car parks, forecourts and civic or landscaped areas. Tell us about your project and we'll advise whether it's the right fit.

Can it take vehicle traffic?

Yes, permeable concrete is used for driveways and car parks. The right thickness and build-up depend on the type of traffic and the ground conditions, so we'll recommend a specification for your site.

How is it different from resin-bound surfacing?

Both are permeable, but they are different systems. Permeable concrete is a cement-based, no-fines concrete, while resin-bound surfacing uses decorative aggregate bound with resin. If you're weighing up both, ask our team or take a look at our Infi-Rox Binder range.

Does it help with drainage and SuDS requirements?

Permeable surfaces can form part of a Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) by letting rainwater soak away rather than run off. Requirements vary by location and project, so check with your local authority or designer, and we can help with the surfacing side.

Does it need any maintenance?

Like any permeable surface, it works best when the pores are kept clear. Regular sweeping and keeping soil, leaves and debris off the surface is recommended, with occasional cleaning if needed. We can advise on the best routine for your site.

Is it available in different colours?

Yes. Choose from natural concrete tones or a bespoke colour. You can browse our RAL & Pantone colour library and send us a code, and samples can be provided before installation.

Can it be laid over my existing driveway?

Laying over an existing sealed surface would stop water draining, so permeable concrete normally needs a suitable free-draining sub-base. We'll look at your site and advise on the best approach.

Who installs it?

Permeable concrete should be installed by trained installers following the correct build-up. Get in touch to find out about installation for your project, or about training through the Infinity Training Academy.
